Dioscorea polystachya: Chinese yam

Plant identification:

  • Growth form: perennial, fast growing twining vine that has a deep, persistent, root-like tuber up to 1 meter long underground
  • Leaf: opposite, but may be laternate in upper notes, and are occasionally arranged ternately in whorls of 3. They are simple, 7-9 veinted, 4-8 cm long, and are typically ovate, hastate, or sagittate in shape. They have deeply lobed bases with an acuminate tip and are reddish-purple along the leaf margins and stems
  • Stem: above ground, a slender stem that twine spirally upwards counterclockwise
  • Flower: arise from the leaf axils in spike or paniculate inflorescences
  • Fruit: membranous, three-angled capsules
