Cynanchum louiseae (C. nigrum, Vincetoxicum nigrum): black swallowwort

Plant Identification:

  • Growth form: perennial, twining herbaceous vine
  • Leaves: oval shaped with pointed tips, 3-4 inches long and 2-3 inches wide occurring in pairs along the stem
  • Flowers: small five-petaled start shaped, dark purple flowers with white hairs, borne in clusters
  • Fruits: slender tapered pods, 2-3 inches long, .25 inches wide, turning from grey to light brown in color as they mature
